“Whatever we do, we work at it with all our heart” — Colossians 3:23
The word spirituality is derived from the Hebrew word ruach, which carries a beautiful range of meanings:
Spirit
Breath
Wind
That which gives life and animation
By being spiritual, we actively explore our beliefs and experiences. We respect all faiths, feelings, and values. Our pupils enjoy learning about themselves, others, and our world by unlocking their imagination, creativity, and capacity to reflect.
Across The Village Schools Federation, we offer endless opportunities for all children and members of our community to explore spirituality. Our Church of England schools deeply reflect this distinctively Christian character.
We build purposeful moments for reflection into daily lessons, outdoor learning including forest school and collective worship. Children develop a clear understanding of how to look back and reflect on what they have experienced—whether drawing from a Bible story, a picture, an icon, a beautiful view, or a learning experience. The ultimate focus is to help us navigate our lives today and tomorrow.
We provide children with structured opportunities for spiritual development in three distinct ways:
WINDOWS: Learning about Life
Giving children opportunities to become aware of the world in new ways. We encourage them to wonder about life's 'Wows' (things that are amazing) and 'Ows' (things that bring us up short). In this, children are learning about life in all its fullness.
MIRRORS: Learning from Life
Giving children opportunities to reflect on their experiences. We invite them to meditate on life's big questions and consider possible answers by exploring their own insights, perspectives, and those of others.
DOORS: Learning to Live
Giving children opportunities to respond to their reflections. They are encouraged to do something creative as a means of expressing, applying, and developing their thoughts and convictions. In this, they learn to live by putting into action what they are coming to believe and value.
