Collective Worship

The Place of Collective Worship in our Church of England Schools

“Whatever we do, we work at it with all our heart” — Colossians 3:23

Across The Village Schools Federation, Collective Worship serves as the heartbeat to the daily rhythm of life in our schools. Guided by our biblical text from Colossians, we aspire to nurture and inspire every child to experience life in all its fullness.

Our schools are rooted in inclusive Christian values that enable everyone to flourish by building knowledge, confidence, and resilience for the future. By coming together daily by invitation, we explore and express our school vision in a unified, inclusive manner. We endeavour for our worship to be transformative—a space where children leave refreshed, re-energised, and inspired to "be the best we can be”.

Where and How We Worship

Collective Worship takes place across diverse settings: within classrooms, on our communal carpet areas (our equivalent to a school hall), throughout our outdoor learning environments, in the local community, and inside our parish churches. Moments of spiritual reflection and deeper questioning are not confined to these slots; they occur organically across the wider life of our schools.

We signpost worship as a distinct, special time by the ringing of bells. Children actively participate by preparing the focus table with meaningful objects that reflect the day's theme. This focus table moves through the liturgical calendar, displaying changing seasonal colours and stoles, while three candles are lit to help us focus on the nature of God.

Worshippers sit together in a variety of formations—often in a mixed-age horseshoe shape. The facilitator deliberately sits at a similar physical level to the children to encourage shared ownership, dignity, and equality.

Our Rich and Varied Pattern of Worship

Our weekly pattern follows the seasons and festivals of the Church year alongside special days of celebration.

Worship reflects aspects of our wider curriculum to foster spiritual growth and introduce children to the impact of faith through a flexible weekly cycle of distinct sessions:

  • Value Worship: We introduce a core Christian value using resources like Roots and Fruits or Oscar Out of the Box, linking it directly back to our school vision.

  • Story & Theme Worship: We share stories Jesus told, look at his life, explore values from other religious traditions, or learn about historical figures who served in humility.

  • Singing Assembly: We sing a range of well-known and seasonal songs, inviting children to choose favourites and pause for brief silent reflections.

  • Visual Worship & Spirituality: We use nature, still life, imagery, or short video clips to engage the children in deep reflection on creation and charitable concerns.

  • Celebration Assembly: We celebrate individual gifts, abilities, and skills within our community, recognising each person as a valued ‘child of God’.

A typical daily act of worship follows a four-part journey:

The Gathering greeting setting our intention;

The Word via a Bible reading, story, or message;

The Exploration bringing the theme alive through drama, dance, song, images, or poetry;

The Response & Sending Out offering dedicated time for prayer, reflection, and quiet thoughts so the impact of worship is carried forward into the working day

Leadership and Community Partnerships

We want our pupils to know they are individually valued, encouraged, and affirmed. Therefore, all members of our community are empowered to lead and shape worship, including school staff, clergy, visitors, and the children themselves through active planning, leading, and evaluation.

Members of the local clergy are a deeply valued part of our school community, leading worship regularly. We also enjoy a strong partnership with the Bridgebuilder Trust, who visit throughout the year to enrich our assemblies.
