NEWTON BLOSSOMVILLE CE SCHOOL

As the days grow brighter and the first signs of spring begin to colour our village, the children at Newton Blossomville CE School have been embracing the seasonal changes with real joy. After the darker winter months, it has been wonderful to see pupils back outside, exploring the beautiful surroundings of Newton Blossomville and appreciating the sunshine returning.

World Book Day

This year’s World Book Day was a celebration of imagination, creativity, and the sheer pleasure of reading. Our chosen whole school text was The Bridges by Tom Percival, a thoughtful story about connection, understanding, and the ways books can build bridges between ourselves and others and lead to wonderful experiences. The children explored its themes deeply, helped in no small part by the fact that our village is home to its own beautiful bridges across the Great Ouse. These offered the perfect spark for discussion and inspiration.

In the spirit of the Government’s National Year of Reading, we have been encouraging children to read for pleasure, encouraging them to choose books that excite them, comfort them, or simply make them laugh. To celebrate this, pupils brought in their favourite books from home, and together we created imaginative “bridges” to each story. This led to a whole host of wonderful activities such as crafting a life sized scarecrow inspired by The Scarecrow’s Wedding by Julia Donaldson, imagining what we might throw into a tree, just like in Oliver Jeffers’ Stuck and writing letters to our favourite coloured crayons after reading The Day the Crayons Quit

The school was buzzing with creativity, and it was a joy to see children so immersed in the stories they love.

The Great Fire of London

Last half term, our history learning centred on the Great Fire of London. We ended the unit with a full immersive day set in 1666. The children arrived dressed as farriers, chandlers, bakers, and other tradespeople of the time, ready to step into the sights and sounds of historic London. Throughout the day, pupils made candles and soap baked bread wrote diary entries using quills, just like Samuel Pepys and retold the events of the fire through drama, with some very promising young actors shining! It was a memorable experience that brought history to life in the most vivid way.

London Landmarks and Learning Adventures

Our learning this term continues with the theme of London, focusing on both its physical and human features. Next week, we will be travelling by train to visit St Paul’s Cathedral, where the children will explore its architecture and history. We will also revisit key moments from the Great Fire of London during our trip, helping pupils deepen and embed their understanding.

Celebrations and Community Events

We are looking forward to welcoming families to our Mother’s Day Breakfast on Friday 13th March, a chance to celebrate the wonderful mums and motherfigures in our school community.

Later in the term, we hope to hold our Outdoor Easter Service (weather permitting). The children will share songs, poems, and artwork, and we will finish with a joyful Easter egg hunt—a lovely way to end what is always a short but very busy half term.

A Special Place to Learn

Newton Blossomville School is a nurturing and magical place to learn. Our small school environment allows us to truly know every child as an individual. Low pupil numbers mean children benefit from personalised support, strong relationships, and rich opportunities that help them thrive both academically and emotionally. Our children grow in confidence, curiosity, and independence, supported by a caring community where everyone is valued. We are currently offering private tours of our school and would be delighted to welcome prospective families. If you would like to arrange a visit or find out more, please contact the school office.

We look forward to an exciting and enriching term ahead and thank our parish and wider community for their continued support.
